Phishing scams use fraudulent emails and websites to impersonate legitimate businesses in hopes of you to disclose your personal information.

Legitimate businesses will never send an email asking you to update your personal information. Reputable businesses will never ask for user names, passwords, credit card information or social security numbers through email, therefore, never give out this information.  If you are concerned about your account, contact the business directly through phone.

Don't click or copy and paste the link in the email to visit the website that you think might be a phishing scam.  Phishers can make links seem to go to the actual business site, when in fact they go somewhere else.

Many of these links will cause a pop-up to display asking for personal information.  Never give this information out!  Remember, when in doubt, contact the business by telephone.  It's advisable to install pop-up blocking software to prevent these kinds of phishing attacks.

Also, before ordering or giving any information to another website, check to make sure it is secure.  You can do this by looking for icons on the ordering page that verifies it is secure.  You will also notice that the web address will begin with https:// instead of http://.
